Music Generation Trad Stage

Music Generation Trad Stage

MGSD Traditional Irish Ensemble

Following a call for young intermediate/advanced musicians, the Music Generation South Dublin traditional ensemble held their 1st rehearsal on Sunday 7th May in Aras Chronain, with over 41 children and young people attending from all across the South Dublin County region- Brittas, Rathcoole, Saggart, Firhouse, Lucan, Palmerstown and Tallaght.

At the launch Aideen Mc Laughlin stated that Music Generation South Dublin is delighted to support this new county-wide traditional ensemble initiative and we look forward to the long-term growth and development of the ensemble for 2017-2018. The ensemble, which hopes to offer a Junior and Senior opportunity in September, aims to provide an extended learning and performance experience for children and young people in the county, in addition to their weekly traditional instrumental tuition and Grupa Cheoil participation and outside their respective schools, hubs and educational centres. The ensemble will explore various styles and genres of music under a traditional framework.

The ensemble currently ranges in ages from 10- 17 years under the direction of James Mahon and the Music Generation South Dublin trad team comprised of Robbie Walsh, Mary Ryan, Aoife Desmond and Anna Mary Donaghy.

From September 2017 it is hoped that this ensemble will move in a progressive direction, with a Junior and Senior ensemble opportunity to cater for younger and older students. For now the focus is to launch the ensemble in the Ruaille Buaille traditional tent on the 10th June.

If you wish to nominate a child from the South Dublin county area, who has been playing their traditional instrument for a minimum of 1 year, please email Aideen McLaughlin on
